How to Measure
It is important to measure each window even if they look alike because there can be differences in size. Use inches as your unit of measure. Make a note of any furniture, doors, or other window spaces which could interfere with tie backs or other window treatments.

Measure Outside and Inside Window Dimensions Please refer to our measuring diagram for more information on what to measure.

When measuring for hardware, blinds or shades, measure the inside window dimensions. Don’t forget to factor in anything that projects into the space, such as a window crank or handle.

For valences, draperies, or other window treatments measure the outside window dimensions. If you intend to draw the draperies back to fully expose the window, measure beyond the window to determine where you want the curtains to be placed.

How to Measure for the Position of the Hardware

  1. After deciding where you want the curtains to be placed, simply use rods of that approximate length. Most metal rods can be extended, and wood poles can be cut to length.
  2. Measure carefully to position the brackets so that the drapery will be centered over the window, be thinking of how the pole or rod fits into the drapery. Mount the brackets according to the package instructions.
  3. Insert the rings, tab tops or rod pockets on the rod before placing it into the brackets. Swags can be placed over top of the rod. Follow any included instructions to position a traverse type curtain rod.

Tips For Drapery Measurements
Decide if you want your curtain to start exactly at the window height, above it, or below. Decide if the curtain will fall to valance length, sill, window apron, exactly to the floor, or pooling longer than floor.

Position your curtain rod. Measure the length from the top of the rod down. If you are using rings, measure from the bottom of the ring hooks.

Scarves should be longer than the width of the window plus twice the length you want the scarf to swag. Increase the length if you are going to wrap the scarf around the rod.

Drapery panels should be about double the length of the curtain rod.
